Dr. Vanessa Holden serves as lead faculty for the Freedom on the Move project (FOTM) based at Cornell University. The national project is a crowdsourced database and transcription site for what historians have called "runaway slave advertisements." These ads, placed in American newspapers from colonial times through the end of slavery in 1865, provide snapshots of enslaved people's resistance. Initially, no advertisements from Kentucky's historic newspapers were included in this archive.
Led by Dr. Holden (Arts and Sciences), a UK Libraries faculty team, including Reinette Jones, Kopana Terry, and Jennifer Bartlett, has developed workflows and trainings to standardize the process by which ads are collected and added to the FOTM project. The team's goals are to collect and make available all extant ads for self-emancipated people present in Kentucky's historical newspapers and to train FOTM's many university partners using UK FOTM's collection and databasing methods. This Spring, 2025, SEEK's first advertisements were added to FOTM. They can be viewed here: Freedom On the Move.
